Beyond the First Glance: What Happens When We Stop to Look Closer

It started with a simple routine: standing outside in the yard with the hose, watering the plants. Up in the shutters of my house, a bird built a nest. She has been busy feeding her newly hatched babies, and despite watching her come and go, I still haven't been able to identify what kind of bird she is.

So I stood there with the water running, looking up into the branches of the front-yard tree where I had just seen her disappear. Because I was actively searching for her, I wasn't just casually glancing anymore; I was fine-tuning my senses. I was watching for the smallest shifts: a flutter of leaves, a subtle shadow, a faint chirp.
I didn't find the bird. But because my eyes were anchored in that heightened state of attention, something else caught my gaze- a single, translucent cicada shell clinging to the tree.
Then my eyes adjusted, and I saw another.
As I let my sight expand, the entire tree seemed to rewrite itself in real time. Clustered along the trunk and branches weren't just one or two exoskeletons, but hundreds of them. A tree that sits in my front yard, that I "look into" daily from the living room window, was suddenly revealed to be home to an entire hidden history I had never truly noticed.

It struck me how easily this simple moment reflects the way we navigate life.
So often, our initial response to an event, a conflict, or an unexpected turn of events is shaped entirely by the top layer of experience. We react to the immediate sensation- the knee-jerk emotion, the quick assumption, or the specific outcome we think we ought to be looking for. We lock onto that first interpretation because it’s the loudest, freshest thing in front of us.
But what happens when we give ourselves permission to pause?
When we give an experience a little space, time, and deliberate attention, that initial vision begins to shift. Just like tuning a camera lens, sitting with a moment allows the surface noise to settle so the finer details can emerge. Sometimes, looking beyond that first reaction reveals a completely different perspective: an unexpected insight, a gentle pivot, or a clarity we couldn't have predicted when we were just reacting to the quick glance in the trees.
Of course, clarity doesn't always arrive on demand. Sometimes the full picture takes weeks, months, or even years to form, and sometimes the answers never quite line up the way we want them to. But the value isn't just in arriving at a neat conclusion...it’s in the willingness to look closer in the first place.
Fun facts about how cicadas are beneficial to the yard!
Natural soil aeration: Emerging nymphs dig tunnels that loosen compact dirt. (When I first saw these perfectly shaped holes, I was sure my landscaper brought a tool to create them!)
Free organic fertilizer: Millions of adult cicadas die and decompose shortly after they mate which offers a massive amount of nitrogen and other nutrients right in to the lawns.
