🌙 The Moon as Mirror: Listening to Our Own Inner Rhythms

Outside of science class in my childhood, I was never really taught to notice the cycles of the moon- to look up and feel a personal connection to it. As a young girl, I didn’t learn to call my period my “moon cycle.” I didn’t know that, especially as women, we share a deep and ancient connection to the rhythm of the moon- one that has largely been lost in our modern Western world.

But as I grew in this awareness, something within me began to remember. It has become easier- even more natural- to connect to, honor, and celebrate her rhythm. I have been learning to notice those times in the month when I feel "surprisingly" low energy or suddenly ready to roar.

Last night, as the full moon filled the sky, we pulled out the telescope and gathered around the fire pit with s’mores. In that moment of stillness and glow, I was reminded again of this quiet, steady cycle.

The Moon as Our Mirror

Each night, the moon hangs quietly above us- changing, softening, disappearing, and returning again. We see her shift, yet rarely pause to notice how much she mirrors our own inner tides. Her rhythm is constant, but her face is never the same. Neither is ours.

Just as the moon waxes and wanes, our emotions, creativity, and energy rise and fall in their own sacred timing. There are days when we feel illuminated- clear, inspired, expressive- and others when we need the darkness, the pause, the inward pull. The beauty lies not in holding one state forever, but in trusting the cycle itself.

The Beauty of Rest and Renewal

In a culture that praises constant productivity and perpetual brightness, we often forget that the moon’s fullness lasts for only one night. The rest of her time is spent growing, retreating, and renewing.

Our inner worlds crave that same permission- to expand, to contract, to rest. When we resist our waning, we deny ourselves the space to gather wisdom and replenish our light.

The Phases Within Us

The darkness of the new moon invites us inward- asking us to listen to what is quiet, unseen, and becoming. The waxing moon stirs movement- a slow awakening, a call to nurture seeds of intention. Fullness brings expression, celebration, clarity. And as the moon wanes again, we are reminded to release, to let go of what has served its purpose, and to rest before beginning all over again.

You might begin to notice how your own inner rhythm moves through these same phases:

🌑 New Moon: Times when you need stillness and solitude- your reset.

🌓 Waxing Moon: Times of gentle effort, building momentum and clarity.

🌕 Full Moon: Times when your ideas and energy glow bright and alive.

🌘 Waning Moon: Times of soft release, integration, and rest.

An Invitation to Reflect

Over the next lunar month, try keeping a simple journal. Note how your energy, emotions, or creativity shift as the moon changes. You may begin to see patterns — a rhythm that belongs uniquely to you.

The moon doesn’t rush her cycles or apologize for her changes. She simply reflects light when she can and rests in darkness when she must.

Can we learn to do the same- to trust our own waxing and waning, to honor both the light and the shadow as essential parts of being whole?
