Traces Left Behind- A Wintering Meditation

This morning, as I wandered outside, I was filled with a quiet sense of wonder.
A fresh, light layer of snow had fallen here in Texas—one of those rare surprises that occasionally arrives and changes everything. Sometimes it’s gentle and brief. Other times it’s the kind of snow or ice storm that brings life to a standstill because we simply aren’t built for it. Fires are lit. Soup on the stove. The world slows.
I stepped into the stillness and noticed the footprints.

Without snow, it’s hard to see who’s been wandering the yard overnight. But this morning, the ground told a story.

Paths crossed and intertwined.

One creature feeding. Another hunting.

Trails overlapping, weaving in and out of one another’s worlds- each life leaving a mark, each movement affecting another.
Otherwise unseen. Now suddenly visible.
Standing there, I was struck by how much this mirrors the human experience.
We weave in and out of each other’s lives in much the same way—through conversations, glances, decisions, moments of care or moments of harm. Every interaction sends something outward. A loving thought, a careless word, a quiet act of kindness. Whether we witness the ripple or not, it moves. It lands somewhere. It matters.
Nature reminded me this morning of how interwoven we truly are. How much of our lives overlap. How no path exists in isolation. We are always shaping one another’s worlds, contributing—consciously or unconsciously—to healing or undoing.
And so I find myself wondering:
What does it take to stay in trust that love will prevail?
Can we continue to choose hope, even when the outcome is unseen?
Can we act—again and again—in ways that feel aligned, honest, and rooted in care?
As I looked at the quiet ground marked only by faint footprints, I was reminded that every step leaves a trace. Every word, every pause, every exchange. We may never know where our paths intersect another’s, or how far the ripple travels—but we do get to choose the energy we place on the ground.
If love is what we want to leave behind, then each small moment becomes a sacred opportunity.
Today, I’m choosing to walk with care.
