The Power of Looking Inward: What Lighthouses Teach Us About Trust

On a recent dream trip to Maine (another post about that!), it was virtually impossible to ignore the presence of lighthouses. They are woven into the very fabric of the culture- standing tall along the rocky shores, appearing as decor on family lawns, proudly featured on boat tours, and lining the shelves of every souvenir shop.
Historically, lighthouses have been revered across cultures as powerful symbols of hope, strength, and guidance. They are the steady beacons that lead weary travelers through life’s wildest storms. But as I was immersed in their presence, a deeper truth came to light.
What if the most powerful lighthouse isn’t the one standing out beyond us on the shore?
When life feels foggy, dense, or deeply uncertain, our instinct is often to look outward for a rescue boat or a signpost. We’ve been taught to ask others for their opinions, guidance, medication, and solutions…but the lighthouse can serve as a profound metaphor for clarity, purpose, and finding our own way.
It could be a gentle reminder to go inward and trust our own inner compass.
I’ve come to consider the lighthouse as a sacred place within myself- rooted in my heart, my essence, and my own truth. When things feel unsteady or fearful, there is immense power in calmly turning our gaze inward rather than searching frantically outside of ourselves.
Of course, learning to rely on this inner light doesn't happen overnight. The more we practice looking inward to ourselves- through silence, meditation, prayer, or reading- the more we create trust in ourselves and in our own inner wisdom.
It is a practice like any other, and the invitation is to build that muscle little by little. By dedicating time to these quiet moments, we develop a grounded self-assurance. Through this steady commitment, our own lighthouse becomes something that can be truly relied upon across time and place, no matter where we find ourselves in life.
Whether you are facing a new beginning, a major life change, or a brief moment of doubt, I invite you to light up your own inner beacon. Let it guide your way and remind you that even the darkest night cannot cover the light within. And if this sounds hard and you'd like some support, please consider reaching out to explore if a 1-1 coaching container could be the right move for you!
