The Wild Spectrum of Female Friendship

Updated: Aug 16

Female friendship is a universe unto itself. It is rich, multi-layered, endlessly complex, and wildly expansive.

No single dynamic can, or should, be everything to us. Some friendships are our wild adventure companions; others are our silent co-workers. Some are the shoulders we cry on at midnight, while others are the friends we call strictly when we need to laugh until our ribs hurt.

There is a unique magic in the friends who know our whole story- the ones who hold the truth of our past without us needing to explain a single chapter. And yet, there is an equally delicate beauty in starting from scratch with someone new: slowly filling in the blanks, discerning what to share, and building trust moment by moment.

A great friend, coach, and co-creator, Anne Marina, shared a pertinent Huff Post article with me this week, that explores the loneliness many of us might feel despite being super “connected”, having hundreds of “friends” on social media, and engaging in school and family functions that constantly place us in close proximity with others.

The article names it the “Friendship Depth Gap”.

Many people have plenty of friends, active group chats and a steady stream of social interaction, yet still feel strangely disconnected, unseen or unfulfilled. A term gaining traction on social media - the “Friendship Depth Gap”- puts a name to that feeling. The idea is simple: We’re surrounded by connection, but lacking genuine emotional intimacy.

Because female friendship holds so much range, navigating it requires us to ask ourselves a few gentle, honest questions:

  • How are we choosing to show up? Are we modeling the depth, honesty, and presence we hope to receive in return?

  • Can we offer an invitation to depth? If a dynamic feels a bit superficial or shallow, we can choose to be the one to drop the mask first. Sometimes, simply going deeper ourselves gives the other person implicit permission to step in.

When we lead with authenticity, we create space for others to meet us there.

Perhaps the most spacious act in any friendship is honoring a dynamic for exactly what it is- without forcing, pressuring, or taking things personally.

If you invite depth and the other person doesn't step through that door, that is okay. Not every friend needs to be our late-night confidant. Recognizing that allows us to enjoy lighthearted, easygoing connections without expecting them to be something they aren't.

When a dynamic isn't meeting your needs, you can trust that inner knowing. You don't have to carry resentment or force a connection that isn't flowing. You can simply, lovingly, let it be what it is—or let it go altogether.

No drama. No pressure. Just quiet trust in what wants to stay and what wants to drift.

If these reflections resonate with you, we’d love for you to join the conversation in our Women’s Circles this week as we dive deeper into Navigating Female Friendships. $22 exchange.

We’ll be gathering to share, listen, and hold space for all the beauty and nuance these relationships bring into our lives:
